September 1996

For this newsletter's Forum, I had previously submitted a piece which was rejected by my colleagues as "in bad taste" and "not my finest moment." One remark was simply "Ouch." Though I admit to it perhaps not having been my best writing, I also felt my creative inspiration crushed by the weight of censorship in my efforts to do a make-up Forum. Since I could not come up with one on my own, I remembered a creative writing exercise of sorts that Phish's lyricist, lead guitarist, manager and I had come up while trying to pass the time on a long bus ride in Europe.

We each would take turns contributing to the passages on the paper as we passed it in a circle until someone deemed it complete. Then, we would title it as a group. I had retained the output of that collective effort in my notebook and figured that in a "meeting of the minds" of such high caliber and creative potential, surely four heads would have to be better than one. Upon reviewing the material, I was pleased to find the results far beyond my wildest expectations. I had been chastised and censored for a minor excursion into "caca-doodoo" humor of which I admit to having a slight affinity towards. But this simply humbled any solo effort I could come up with. I feel much better knowing that this Fish's Forum (just a small sample of our session) will represent more than just me, and my views or tastes, but reaches beyond to truly reflect upon a wider range of the creative potential and versatility of the Phish organization as a whole. Enjoy.
